As the largest federal state in Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia focuses on research, technological development, and innovation when seeking to strengthen its growth and competitiveness. It particularly looks to promote the strengths and potential of various regions. With a wide range of funding measures at its disposal, the state government provides the impetus for funding technological, economic, and social innovations, in addition to co-financing arrangements within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Furthermore, the state uses its own funds to finance research and development in the fields of energy, environmental and climate protection, the health economy and life sciences, digitization, new media, production and materials, e-mobility, mobility, and logistics. The state government has also established funding measures to help the shaping of universities, start-up companies, small and medium-sized enterprises, and regional development.
