The transformation towards sustainable living is the key challenge facing society. In the business area Sustainable Development and Innovation, we provide stimulus at national and international level in the fields of sustainability and the circular economy, applied basic energy and hydrogen research, bioeconomy, marine, coastal and polar research, geosciences, maritime technologies, life sciences and health research, as well as materials research and chemistry. We also support structural measures to support knowledge and technology transfer, the formation of clusters, and start-up companies. The funding of structurally underdeveloped regions plays a central role in this process. In the business area Sustainable Development and Innovation, we implement a large number of funding programmes on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and other federal authorities.
