Electric mobility is considered a key technology of the future. However, the transition to electric mobility requires profound changes in the technical systems and consumer mobility behaviour, as well as new products and services. This requires comprehensive innovations at several levels. In addition to furthering the technical development of the batteries and the electric drive itself, the creation of an adequate infrastructure is substantial.

The Free State of Bavaria is pushing for a switch to electric mobility. Therefore, innovative projects in the Bavarian electric mobility model regions are funded to obtain meaningful test results and experiences for the everyday operation of electric vehicles.

Funding is being provided for electric mobility projects in the model regions of the Bavarian Forest (e-Forest), Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Bad Neustadt an der Saale. Each model region faces different challenges:

  • In the Bad Neustadt an der Saale model region, one of the studies looks at the high proportion of commuters, and the technical and industrial economic structure in combination with electric mobility.
  • With its touristic structure, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen model region facilitates the development of electric mobility which addresses sustainable mobility behaviour for visitors. A holistic approach will be studied in this case.
  • The e-Forest model region aims to show that electric mobility can also be achieved in rural areas and under difficult natural conditions (such as climatic and topographical).
