Geotechnologies Special Programme

a programme of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

The Geotechnologies Special Programme is a geoscientific research and development programme based on a joint initiative of BMBF and DFG (German Research Foundation). Research studies conducted as part of the special programme aim to obtain better understanding of process sequences and interactions occurring in the geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. This is the only way to better assess the anthropogenic influence on the natural equilibria and cycles and to appropriately gear political action.

In order to achieve sustainable earth management, interdisciplinary cooperation between various branches of science must be intensified. For this reason, the GEOTECHNOLOGIES Special Programme especially endeavours to focus the competence of various research institutions and industrial companies. Participation by companies reinforces the application-oriented approach of the programme.

The Geotechnologies Special Programme, scheduled to run between 10 to 15 years, is based on a programme document written by the Geocommmission that defined 13 priority topics which were to be used to address the basic geoscientific issues of the future. The individual priority areas are coordinated by either BMBF or DFG.

Project Management Jülich coordinates only the thematic priority areas that are under BMBF’s responsibility.
