New Materials in Bavaria

an initiative of the Free State of Bavaria

Bavaria’s strong competence in materials technology makes it an international leader in this area.  Applications-oriented materials research is increasingly taking the needs of the market into account and is developing complex materials systems for specific applications. This means that in Bavaria, too, materials technology is one of the major pillars of industry. Since 2006, the Bavaria has consolidated its competence in the area of materials in a "New materials cluster" (Cluster neue Werkstoffe) of the "Allianz Bayern innovativ".

The Bavarian State Government has specifically promoted the development of new materials since the early 1990s in the areas of metals, polymers, ceramics, glasses, and composite systems. Up to 2007, around € 45 million was provided via the New Materials in Bavaria funding programme implemented by Project Management Jülich on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport, and Technology.  Funding recipients are projects by companies in cooperation with universities and nonuniversity research institutions. In Bavaria, the commercialization of research results is an important criterion.

Funding is granted to Bavarian companies, preferably small to medium-sized enterprises, in cooperation with Bavarian research institutions as part of collaborative projects. The long-term goal of the funding is future implementation of the R&D results in the form of products or processes in Bavaria.
