Research Bonus

a programme of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

In order to strengthen Germany’s competitiveness, science and industry must work together better. Universities and nonuniversity research institutions, in particular, must open themselves up to cooperation with industry to a greater extent than before. The Research Bonus has made a clear step in this direction: cooperation pays off, especially with small and medium-sized enterprises.

BMBF intends to use the Research Bonus to offset structure-related deficits in the cooperation of universities and nonuniversity research institutions with industry, especially with small and medium-sized enterprises. Its instrument is a research bonus awarded to the research institutions for implementing an R&D contract for medium-sized enterprises. The objective is to develop additional competencies in knowledge and technology transfer, as well as further business-oriented collaborations. In this way, BMBF hopes to motivate universities and nonuniversity research institutions to identify marketable topics and work with partners from industry to translate these ideas into new products.
