National Research Strategy BioEconomy 2030
BioEconomy aims to achieve efficient and resource-friendly use of biological resources such as plants, animals, and microorganisms. It concerns a wide variety of sectors, including agriculture, fishery, plant breeding, the food industry, as well as the pharmaceutical industry and the energy economy. Biobased innovations also provide growth impetus for other traditional sectors, such as in the raw materials and food trade sector, the IT sector, mechanical engineering and plant construction, the automotive industry, the environmental technology sector, and the construction industry.
In November 2010, the Federal Government adopted the National Research Strategy BioEconomy 2030 – Our Route Towards a Biobased Economy". Over € 2 billion has been earmarked for this research strategy for the coming six years.
As part of this programme, research and innovation will promote the structural shift from oil-based to biobased industry, giving rise to great opportunities for growth and employment. At the same time, Germany intends to shoulder its international responsibilities on the issues of global food supplies, biomass-based commodities and energy, and climate and environmental protection.
