With its substantial expertise in materials technology, Bavaria can claim a leading position in the international arena. Its application-oriented materials research is increasingly addressing the needs of the market and developing complex material systems for specific applications. This makes materials technology one of the most important pillars of the Bavarian economy. The State has been pooling its expertise in the field of materials with the "New Materials Cluster" of the "Allianz Bayern Innovativ” (Alliance for Bavarian Innovation) since 2006.

The Bavarian State Government has been supporting the development of new materials since the early 1990s. The "New Materials in Bavaria" funding programme, which is implemented by Project Management Jülich on behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, supports the research, development and testing of modern materials and new process technologies. Approximately 107 million euro had been provided by the end of 2016.
