Sustainable Development

The United Nations has adopted 17 sustainability goals as part of its “Agenda 2030”. The objectives span all major areas of life and policy-related spheres of activity from the eradication of hunger and poverty, through gender equality, to the protection of life on land and below water. With the new edition of the “German Sustainability Strategy”, the Federal Government is following these development goals. We support the Federal Government in anchoring the sustainability goals in the funding programmes for various technology sectors. “Agenda 2030” also specifies the framework for research and development funding. In particular, research must consider the effects which the measures implemented for the achievement of one objective have on the achievement of the others, and how existing conflicts between objectives can be overcome.

In our business area “Sustainable Development”, we pool our expertise in the fields of resource efficiency, bioeconomy, climate protection and climate change, marine research and maritime technologies, and administer the relevant funding programmes on behalf of the Federal Ministries of Education and Research (BMBF), for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
